Spanish Speaking Countries
It is fun to learn about Spanish speaking countries and even more fun to visit them. We have visited Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Costa Rica. Our experiences were tremendous. We met interesting people and learned about their culture. Plus the added benefit of a chance to practice conversational Spanish.
The following is a list of countries where Spanish, the second most spoken language in the world, is spoken:ArgentinaBoliviaChileColombiaCosta RicaCubaDominican RepublicEl SalvadorEquatorial GuineaGuatemalaHondurasMexicoNicaraguaPanamaParaguayPeruPuerto RicoSpainUruguayVenezuela
During Spain's colonial period, from 1492 to 1898, Spaniards migrated and brought their language and culture all over the world.
Take Advantage of Every Opportunity
I always advise my children to take advantage of every opportunity to speak. Visiting foreign countries can improve your fluency. In just a short visit, you can achieve more than you would during many months of language class.
Additionally, there are many opportunities here at home to speak. There are 34 million Spanish speakers in the US. We have met people from the following countries: Cuba, Columbia, Venezuela, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Peru, Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica. Most people are very gracious, when you tell them you would like to practice.
Do you detect your server, at the luncheonette, has an accent? Go ahead, try ordering lunch in Spanish and see if you can get your child to order ice cream. And be sure to return for lunch and language practice regularly.
