It is useful to memorize French phrases. It helps with fluency and basic French phrases are handy for travel.

Basic French Phrases

Bonjour Hello
Je m’appelle… My name is
Au revoir Goodbye
See you soon. À bientôt.
Pardon me. Pardon.
Where do you live? (informal) Où habites-tu?
Where do you live? (formal) Où habitez-vous?
I live in France. J’habite en France.
I live in Canada. J’habite au Canada.
I live in the United States. J’habite aux États-Unis.
How are you? (informal) Ça va?
How are you? (formal) Comment allez-vous?
Well or fine Ça va bien.
Bad or not well. Ça va mal.
So, so Comme çi, comme ça.
I speak French. Je parle français.
I do not speak French. Je ne parle pas français.
I speak English. Je parle anglais.
Do you speak English? Parlez-vous anglais?
I do not understand. Je ne comprends pas.

I am hungry. J’ai faim.
I am thirsty. J’ai soif.
He is hungry. Il a faim.
She is hungry. Elle a faim.
I would like… Je voudrais…

At the Hotel

Do you have any rooms available? Avez-vous des chambers libres?
How much does it cost? C’est combien?

Fun Game to Learn Directions

Draw a map with various destinations and roads i.e. Post Office, school, the train station etc. Give your child a small match box car. Have you child drive to the different destinations and tell you if he or she is going to the right, or to the left, or straight, in French.
