Counting in Spanish

For kids, a fun way to practice counting in Spanish is to clap the numbers, march the numbers, or snap the numbers. Keep it active. In our classroom Spanish program, we always have a countdown to storytime. So there is lots of counting review.

Count the stairs, in your house, count the fruit as you load your shopping cart, and count jelly beans.

Take some time and just focus on 1-10. When your child is really solid add on 11-20, but then change the activity. So your child can clap 1-10 and then march 11-20.

Counting Mexican Fruit Salad

Cooking or preparing food is an entertaining and delicious way to practice counting in Spanish. Have your child say each number in Spanish, while preparing this healthy fruit salad.

1 lime

2 mangoes (peeled)

3 cucumbers (peeled)

4 slice of jicama

5 strawberries

6 cherries

7 teaspoons orange juice

8 blueberries

9 nuts

10 raisins

Cut the fruit into bite sized pieces. Assemble all of the a bit lightly with salt and chile powder (optional but it really gives it the Mexican taste.)

Fishing for Spanish Numbers

Cut out fish shapes and write a number on each one – 1-20. Each fish should have a paper clip on it. Children then can be given fishing poles or string with a magnet on it. Children must say the number in Spanish, which is on each fish caught.
